High school senior creates cookbook for Marshall Fire victims

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 17:17:20 GMT

LONGMONT, Colo. (KDVR) — A Silver Creek High School senior recently created a cookbook to honor Marshall Fire victims and bring a sense of home back to them. Most people who lost everything in the Marshall Fire had their immediate needs met when it came to bedding and a roof over their heads to be replaced. But over a year later, family heirlooms and cherished items are things they’ll never get back. This Colorado town is getting a makeover on an HGTV show That’s why a local high school senior, Miranda Beasley, made it her mission to bring back a sense of home to those fire victims. "The Family Meal" is the cookbook she created for her capstone project at Silver Creek High School. "It originally started my junior year of high school because I am part of a program at Silver Creek called SCLA, where you learn a bunch of leadership skills and learn how to manage projects," Beasley said. "Our assignment that year, because it was right after the Marshall Fire, was to try and create a p...

Authorities said no staff or prison inmates were taken hostage and no one was injured during an hours-long disturbance at the Bristol County House of Correction that led to officers escorting prisoners out of the facility in handcuffs. While there were no injures, Sheriff Paul Heroux said inmates caused between $100,000 and $200,000 in damage in one of two housing units involved.“The second unit has far less,” he said.Officials said the incident at the facility started in the morning after authorities attempted to move inmates to different housing units. In an update provided by the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office, sheriff’s office spokesperson Jonathan Darling said the incident occurred while staff were taking steps to make the facility “more suicide-resistant.”“Part of this process is moving inmates to different housing units,” Darling said. “Friday morning, some inmates in one of the housing units did not want to move, leading to the current inci...

Red Sox snap Brewers’ 4-game win streak with 5-3 victory

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Alex Verdugo homered for the second straight game and doubled to help the Boston Red Sox defeat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-3 on Friday night.Verdugo also went deep Thursday in Boston’s 11-5 victory over the Minnesota Twins. He hit a two-run shot in the third inning Friday against Milwaukee’s Freddy Peralta (2-2).Rowdy Tellez hit a solo shot for the Brewers, who had their four-game winning streak snapped.Boston came from behind, thanks in part to its patience. Each of the last three Red Sox players who scored had reached base on a two-out walk. The Brewers led 3-2 in the sixth when Peralta issued consecutive walks to Kiké Hernández and Triston Casas, who worked his way back from an 0-2 count.Hoby Milner replaced Peralta and promptly allowed a tying bloop single to pinch-hitter Rob Refsnyder. Jarren Duran followed with a liner that went off the glove of diving third baseman Owen Miller, resulting in a single that brought home Casas with the go-ahe...

Chicago White Sox suffer a crushing 8-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, allowing 3 runs in the 9th: ‘Just turn the page’

The Chicago White Sox were three outs from perhaps a momentum-turning victory Friday. But three big swings from the Tampa Bay Rays turned the game into a crushing defeat. The Rays scored three in the ninth against reliever Reynaldo López to beat the Sox 8-7 in front of 17,973 at Tropicana Field. With the Sox leading 7-5, the Rays’ Christian Bethancourt homered to right to lead off the bottom of the ninth. Yandy Díaz singled. And Brandon Lowe ended the game with a two-run blast to right.López said it came down to bad pitch location.“The pitches right in the middle,” he said. “I couldn’t hit the spot today.”The Sox have lost seven of nine and 10 of 14. They fought back from a four-run deficit to take the lead, only to see Rays storm back in the ninth.“We all trust Lopey and I’ll trust him again tomorrow,” Sox manager Pedro Grifol said. “He left a couple of balls up, and I’ll give him the ball again tomorrow....

RJ Barrett, Jalen Brunson bounce back in Knicks’ blowout Game 3 win over Cavs

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 17:17:20 GMT

It was sometimes ugly, sometimes beautiful and overall dominant from the Knicks.New York didn’t win style points Friday night but dominated where it mattered most — on the scoreboard — riding a resurgent RJ Barrett and an energized crowd to a 99-79 victory to take a 2-1 series lead. The Cavs shot just 36.8 percent on the evening, which was lowlighted by a disaster from Game 2 hero Darius Garland. The former All-Star missed (shield your eyes, children) 17 of his 21 attempts, as the Cavs managed the fewest points of the 2023 playoffs.Much of Cleveland’s poor production was about the Knicks’ swarming defense. Their active hands and feet. But the Cavs also weren’t ready for the moment at MSG, while Barrett (19 points, 8-for-12 shooting) and Jalen Brunson (21 points, six assists) rose to the occasion.Garbage time started early in the fourth quarter when Obi Toppin’s dunk provided the Knicks a 20-point advantage. Then the Knicks stepped on the oppon...

Red Sox make statement with impressive 5-3 win over Brewers

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 17:17:20 GMT

This one could have easily gone the other way.Leading 3-2 in the top of the sixth, Milwaukee Brewers starter Freddy Peralta had Red Sox rookie Triston Casas down 0-2 in the count with two outs. Peralta had been terrific all evening, with a two-run home run by Alex Verdugo the only real blemish on his line, but Casas battled back and drew a walk to end Peralta’s day and give the Red Sox a small opening.Unlike so many times over the past year, they wouldn’t let this chance slip away.Rob Refsnyder and Jarren Duran delivered back-to-back RBI singles to tie the game and take the lead, and the Red Sox throttled the Brewers from there to pick up one of their most impressive wins of the young season, 5-3.“You never know who it’s going to be,” Verdugo told NESN’s Jahmai Webster after the game. “It doesn’t matter if you’re in the starting lineup or coming off the bench, we expect everybody to be ready and contribute and today was just anot...

Celtics give Hawks life, unable to overcome their scorching shooting night in Game 3 loss

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 17:17:20 GMT

ATLANTA — The Celtics knew they were going to get the Hawks’ best shot on Friday. After two convincing victories in Boston, it was expected. The young and hungry Hawks were desperate, ready to prove themselves, and had a home crowd waiting for them to show it.The Celtics have thrived in these situations for most of the season, with a target on their back after winning the Eastern Conference last season. But Friday night offered a humbling reminder for these Celtics that the road back to that stage is difficult to reach. There will be no sweep in this first-round series, which seemed to almost be a foregone conclusion after the Celtics had their way in Games 1 and 2. They got the Hawks’ best punch, and they couldn’t match it. They couldn’t overcome their absurd shot-making. And now it’s suddenly a series after suffering a 130-122 loss in Game 3 here on Friday night.“We knew it wasn’t going to be easy,” Marcus Smart said. “That’s why we let the outside noise continue to talk for us. It...

‘I feel amazing’: Celtics’ Malcolm Brogdon enjoys healthy season thanks to new role

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 17:17:20 GMT

ATLANTA — While the Celtics’ trade for Malcolm Brogdon last summer was almost universally praised, one question lingered: Could the veteran guard stay healthy enough to be the difference maker Boston hoped for?Brogdon suffered from a bit of an injury bug over the course of his first six seasons in the league. Last season – in his final year with the Pacers – Brogdon only played in 36 games, mostly due to an Achilles injury. It was frustrating for him. But the Celtics then acquired him to take on a reserve role, a job he embraced and excelled in.The move not only led to him being named the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year, it also allowed him to have one of the healthiest seasons of his career.Brogdon had his share of minor injuries – including right hamstring tightness that kept him out for four consecutive games in November – but he ultimately played in 67 games, his most in a season since he was a rookie in 2016-17. He also played in a career-low 26.0 minutes per game as his body wasn’...
